An Academic Article

Raghavan, S., Hu, D., Akoto, M., & Rendon, K. (2024). Community heals: Lessons from qualitative narratives of first-generation college students. Journal of American College Health : J of ACH, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1080/07448481.2024.2409670

Summary

The academic article I found that interests me is about first generation students. In summary, the article talks about experiences and struggles that first generation college students go through. The article examines the challenges such as expenses, social life, academic pressures and family life balance that can occur. The article highlights the importance of the community in which your school is in. A key factor to helping first generations students in through the resources that the campus and community can provide and offer. The researchers aim to offer insights on how colleges can better support first-generation students and foster a more inclusive and environment.

Reflection

This article interests me because as a first generation student, it is rewarding to be able to relate to these struggles. It is interesting to look at present studies that prove (in numbers) what mental health challenges and stress come with this title. What I learned from this reading is how important family life is to a first generation student. Although parents might not of helped as much in the college process, they hold a significant spot in the students life. I also learned that first generation students do not receive the proper support and on campus funding that larger schools with bigger budgets may offer. This article means a lot to me as I am able to relate and vent through the authors findings.
